Did you know, history records show that drink coasters date back to the 16th century in the days of Queen Elizabeth I and the great English sea captain and privateer, Sir Francis Drake?
Now while Liz and Frank were organising battles and burning Spanish ships, the Brit government of the day still allowed Spanish merchants to hawke their drink coasters - even though Spain was England’s sworn enemy!! Goes to show that coasters were a popular item indeed!!
The English considered them to be a great accessory to the drinking glasses which they used regularly – early Brits loved a drop of sack! (or as we would call it – wine!)
Of course their coasters weren’t made of cork and didn’t display our lovely girls!!!
Just as well, because Frank would love them, but we’re not too sure that Liz would…
